A man is in hospital with serious injuries after a cooking fire at a student apartment building in Waterloo Saturday night.

Two fire stations and three trucks responded to a Lester Street apartment. Officials say the man had an oil fire that he tried to put out with water.

Police say the man has been transported to the Burn Unit at the Hamilton General Hospital with second and third degree burns to twenty percent of his body.

In the process of moving the pot from the stove to the sink he lit the floor on fire. Public education officer with Waterloo Fire Department John Percy says the fire also displaced five residents who lived in the student apartment. The Red Cross is providing them all with temporary shelter.

Waterloo fire fighters and the Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze. Officials have not place a dollar loss on the damages caused by fire and smoke.
