WINDSOR, Ont. - A 30-year-old Windsor man appeared in court Friday on a charge of first-degree murder.

Jesse Meloche is charged in the stabbing death of 40-year-old Lance Peter Smoke -- Windsor's first homicide in more than two years.

Police say Smoke's body was found outside a home on Albert Street on Thursday night. He had been stabbed multiple times in the torso.

Defence lawyer Evan Weber said the case will return to court on Wednesday when his client will appear by video.

Police aren't releasing details on a possible motive but said it was not believed to be drug-related.

Windsor's last homicide occurred 27 months ago.

Sgt. Brett Corey told a news conference that the home the victim was found in was not his own residence.

"We believe he made it to a neighbour's house and that is where he was located," he said.

Police are searching for a murder weapon, believed to be a knife.
