Citing a desire to spend more time with his family because he hasn't been "a very good father," Dennis McPhee has stepped down as Head Football Coach at the University of Waterloo. Although McPhee is well-connected in the Canadian Football League, he says does not have another job lined up.
McPhee spent five years coaching the Warriors, leading them to an overall record of seven wins and 25 losses. Although Waterloo never made the playoffs during his tenure, McPhee was credited with bringing in some talented players. He was also a driving force behind the installation of Warrior Field in time for the 2008 season.
While some will remember McPhee as being Waterloo's coach during the 2010 steroid controversy, he was cleared of any wrongdoing. McPhee held the program together that year, setting up scrimmages against other OUA football teams during their bye weeks. The Warriors returned to the field this fall, but lost all eight of their games.
Assistant Head Coach Joe Paopao and longtime Assistant Marshall Bingeman will remain on the Waterloo sidelines through the 2012 season. Athletic Director Bob Copeland says he plans to meet with coaches and senior administration and that a search is underway for a new Head Coach. Copeland hopes to make a decision within the next two weeks.
