A number of large boulders have been added around Waterloo Regional Police Service headquarters in Cambridge, Ont. to help protect the building.

The move comes after a man drove his car through the front doors of the building on Sunday morning. The Dodge Magnum came to rest close to where officers and civilian staff work.

Thirty-seven-year-old Bryan Welfred of Tavistock has been charged in connection with the crash.

Waterloo Regional Police Deputy Chief Steve Beckett says "We'll be looking to things like bollards and a number of different security issues as we move forward in the next weeks and months ahead. We wanted to do something fairly quickly because there's an immediate security concern."

The rocks have been added for temporary protection at headquarters, North Division and South Division until a more permanent solution can be put in place.

Ken Seiling, Waterloo Region chair, says "It's always a balance between making it accessible, we have to serve our citizens, but at the same time, making sure that people are safe."

Many are simply glad the crash didn't happen at a busier time, when many more officers, civilians and members of the public could have been involved.

Bruce Tucker, president of the Waterloo Regional Police Association, says "If that had happened Saturday afternoon at around four o'clock or so it would have been catastrophic to members of the public because we had a lot come into our public foyer here and they would have been harmed or worse."

Meanwhile many still hope that nothing similar will ever happen again.
