Two men and one youth have been charged with arson following a fire that gutted an abandoned farm house in Elmira on Sunday night.

Police and fire crews were called to the home on Union Street around 6 p.m. Witnesses reportedly saw three males running from the area.

Firefighters had to wait for hydro crews to arrive on scene to turn off the power before they could enter the building.

The roof of the house, which has not been occupied for several years, was destroyed.

There were no injuries reported and no damage estimate is yet available.

Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says the condition of the house doesn't impact whether charges are laid.

"This would be a property that would belong to someone. It is a criminal act to set a fire so we have an investigation to do."

The three males, an 18- and 19-year-old from Woolwich Township, and a 17-year-old from Waterloo, will appear in court later this year to face the charges. No names are being released.

The investigation continues and anyone with information is asked to contact the Waterloo Regional Police Service at 519-650-8500 Ext. 3399 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
