They've rolled out the red carpet in Stratford for Governor General David Johnston, who will be attending the opening night of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's 59th season.

He had a busy day even before attending the performance of ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor.'

He was greeted at city hall Monday morning by students from Jeanne Sauve Catholic School before signing the guest book and meeting with Mayor Dan Mathieson.

He also toured the temporary home of the University of Waterloo's new Stratford Campus. As the university's former president, he was among those who led the charge to establish the new campus.

Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson says "David Johnston was the visionary behind it. When we talked about bringing a campus here, David is the individual who said it should be in digital media, that that is where the economy is headed, and he helped pull every lever and helped developed a strategic plan to make it happen."

Lunch was spent at Northwestern High School's ‘Screaming Avocado' where culinary arts students serve up healthy lunches.

After the lunch Johnston Tweeted "Sharon and I just had a wonderful lunch at #Stratford's Screaming Avocado where high school students cook and serve local ingredients."

Johnston then took part in a panel discussion on volunteerism back at city hall.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and several other dignitaries were expected to join Johnston and his wife at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's opening performance.
