Curbing food waste

It's how we waste food.

Canadians toss out almost half the food we produce.

Why is so much food ending up in the trash?

Looking for ideas on how to avoid wasting food? Here are some helpful tips from our viewers:

"I try to save food by blanching and freezing it immediately. I have blanched broccoli, spinach, carrots, squash and pineapple quite successfully." -- Yvonne Schaffelburg, Waterloo

"The grocery stores are way over priced, and the way to beat them at their own game is to visit the country. I can buy organically grown beef at $2.35 a pound cut and wrapped. Food straight from the farm has 10 times the flavour. I don't understand why people don't do this; it would save them a fortune." -- Kim, Brantford

"I wanted to tell you about something I have been doing for over 25 years. If I have just a bit of leftovers, I freeze it in a two cup container. Then as the days go on I keep adding small amounts of leftovers to the container. When I have two to three containers in my freezer I take soup stock and add that to a pot with the frozen leftovers. When my son was little he called it "junk soup" and the name has stuck. Very little goes to waste in my house." -- Cristina Brewster
