Former clients say financier Daniel P. Reeve bilked them out of millions of dollars, and a year and nine months later, the criminal investigation is still ongoing.

CTV first looked into the dealings of Reeve and one of his companies, DPR Financial Inc. back in 2009, after which many people stepped forward saying they had been victims.

Claims against Reeve totalling over $20 million have since been filed, and many of those who invested with Reeve are still out their money.

Staff Sgt. Dale Roe of the Waterloo Regional Police Fraud Branch says, "We've interviewed roughly 100 complainants regarding the matter, and now it's come down to examining the documents…this would probably be one of the biggest our service has undertaken."

Besides being the focus of a criminal investigation by the Waterloo Regional Police Service, the southwestern Ontario financier is also supposed to be banned from doing business in the financial sector.

In May 2009 the Financial Services Commission of Ontario issued a Cease and Desist Order against Reeve, DPR Financial Inc. and Millionaire Mortgage Inc. The order was made permanent less than a month later.

But Reeve still opened a new business, myperfectmortgage.org, which has since been shut down by the Commission.

The financial advisor came to the attention of authorities through complaints from several people who say he took their money and offered impressive returns, but they never saw their life savings again.

It was the same situation with a series of businesses run by Reeve, including DPR Financial Inc., Millionaire Mortgage Inc. and the Jakobstettel Inn in St. Jacobs, among others.

Some victims have declined to talk on camera for fear of jeopardizing civil lawsuits against Reeve. And while some have won judgments saying Reeve owes them money, no one knows where that money is now.

Many of the fraud victims are now hoping criminal charges will be laid against Reeve soon, and they may get their wish.

In an email sent to complainants before Christmas, Waterloo Regional police say they are making "excellent progress" and that those who filed complaints will be "very satisfied" when the investigation is complete.

With regards to Reeve himself, Roe says "At this point in time there hasn't been any contact with him. We need to finish our investigation first before that step."

According to the same email, 133 people have now stepped forward claiming to be victims, with three new claims filed as recently as December 2010.
