Parents living in Baden are upset with the Township of Wilmot's decision to move a crossing guard a few blocks down Snyders Road West to accommodate a new school.

Concerned parent Marie Pavey says moving the guard to Brenneman Street from Queen Street was made abruptly and with little notice.

She says the change means some children don't have a safe place to cross, with the nearest crossing guard being a couple of blocks down the street.

"Their current decision is to have the children walk up to the light [on Foundry Street] and cross," says Pavey. "So that means going past the school and adding another half a kilometre to their route."

Another parent says busy streets and students don't mix well. "They do need a crossing guard there -- that is a fast road," says Roy Cornish.

Pavey is asking the township to provide a third crossing guard at Queen Street to provide a safe route for children who walk to school.

A township spokesperson says a crossing guard costs about $7,000 per year and that they will review the situation.

Pavey is circulating a petition through town and plans to appear before council when it meets on Jan. 30.
