Kitchener's Charles Street was closed for several hours following a two vehicle crash at Cedar Street involving a car and a fire truck.

Two people were sent to hospital. The elderly woman driving the car reportedly suffered minor injuries while a firefighter was taken in for observation.

Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Frank Heinrich says "A vehicle travelling westbound on Charles Street entered the intersection at the same time a fire truck was travelling north on Cedar Street with the lights and sirens activated, and they've contacted each other."

There were no passengers in the car, which was badly damaged in the collision that occurred around 11:00 a.m.

The fire truck also took out a hydro pole and light standard, and came to rest within inches of a house.

There were some reports of power outages in the area.

Joseph Peplinski lives in an apartment across the street, he says "I jumped up and went to the window and looked down, and I saw like that happen and it was crazy to see that."

Sandra Richards also lives nearby, she says she heard the sirens and a loud bang, "I'm amazed the lady wasn't killed you know, I really hope she's okay, that's my main concern."

Waterloo Regional Police say it's amazing that no one was seriously injured.
