Janet Philp, who was convicted of attempted murder on Tuesday evening, was back in Superior Court Wednesday morning.

During her appearance, the judge ordered a mental health assessment and pre-sentence report on the Guelph mother before the sentencing phase of the case.

The 44-year-old was also ordered to be held in custody before her sentencing hearing.

Philp was found guilty of attempted murder on Tuesday after a seven day trial and five hours of deliberation.

She was accused of setting fire to her home in July 2008 while her son, Taylor Morel, was in an upstairs bedroom. The teen escaped from the burning home by jumping from a window.

The prosecution said Philp was fed up with her son not helping around the house, and angry he planned to return to his father's home in North Bay.

Rick King spent 14 years behind bars for attempted murder, and he now helps others entering and leaving the prison system.

He befriended Philp and had taken her to dinner before the guilty verdict was reached.

He says "All she's concerned about is her kids, you know, and the fact she can't be there to support them. It's terrible for her. She's living a nightmare."

Philp is expected to return to court for sentencing in about two months.
